Red wine.

Smooth, Mineral, Savoury.

I am a big fan of the wines of André Lourenço, the man behind Primeiras Gotas.

Working out of his little winery in Fundão, he creates some really cool wines which capture the essence and tradition of the region that surrounds. Not only this, but he is wildly experimental, always with something new and interesting to splash into your glass. I like to refer to him as a wine pirate as he always seems to be roaming around his local region looking for something new and exciting to produce.

The Corricão is one of his most privileged terroirs too. It is a large sloping plain that stretches out on the southern side of the Serra da Gardunha, heading in the direction of Alentejo. This plain is made up of a loose granitic gravel and sand mix and all across its surface are little patches of old vines. One of these patches is in the hands of André and it is a mix of a number of different local varieties, the main one being the local favourite Rufete with a few other under the radar locals such as Marufo, Carrega Burros and Alfrocheiro.

To make this wine, the grapes were destemmed and fermented with native yeasts in steel vessels. 25% then went on to be aged in chestnut and Portuguese oak barrels for 1 year. Tassssty AF!

Why We Love This Wine!

This is a gorgeous red. So smooth, vibrant and elegant. The big mind blow for me though is how much it reminds me of Barolo from the Piedmont. It shares a lot of the same expression and precision that the Nebbiolo grown in Piedmont shows as it was grown in conditions that resemble one another greatly. André even went so far as to say that the indigenous varieties of Beira Baixa were introduced by the Romans and perhaps Rufete is a distant cousin of Nebbiolo. It certainly tastes that way. Super cool stuff!
